Miami Criminal Attorney Reviews the Facts: Trayvon Martin, Websites, and $200,000

|

As a criminal defense attorney practicing in Miami for the past 30 years I have seen it all, including a defendant who doesn’t know his true financial position. The website debacle is a non-issue. Here’s why.

George Zimmerman was in custody when the websites were set up. Since he was in custody, he had no access to them and probably had no idea what funds were in them. Additionally he never gave sworn testimony at his bond hearing, therefore was not dishonest about them. His lawyer came forward immediately and discussed on National TV that they had discovered the money. That is evidence that there was no surreptitious motive in not disclosing the amount of money the website had collected at the bond hearing. It was a well known media fact that these websites had been set up. If the prosecutors really cared about them they could have gotten the information about the amount of money in them. You can’t hide what’s in a PayPal account. It’s not like cash.

The court in setting Zimmerman’s release conditions set a low bond. That decision was based on the lack of evidence presented by the State at the bond hearing. As one of the lead officers said in court there is “No evidence to rebut George Zimmerman’s version of events that Trayvon Martin was the aggressor”. Additionally if the court believed that George Zimmerman was a flight risk the Judge would not be allowing him to live out of the State of Florida.

The witness’s called at the bond hearing may have not told the truth but that’s not George Zimmerman’s fault, after all he was in jail. The Judge today decided to take a slow steady approach and told everyone to get him more information before he decides this issue. Even the State didn’t ask for or seek a bond revocation. They only asked for an increase in bond.

Zimmerman’s current criminal defense team has been playing catch up since they came on board the day of his arrest. The information about the website they simply did not have. They had been doing this case pro bono, surely now they will have funds available to help with the staggering costs of this type of defense. Zimmerman has done nothing improper nor have his lawyers.

His bond should remain the same. If you or someone you know is in need of legal representation for traffic crime offensesdrug possession, domestic violenceviolent crimesburglary, and/or theft, please contact Galanter at  (305) 576-0244 or (954) 524-6600.
